An AI citation tells you which source supported an answer. A brand mention tells you which company was named. A recommendation tells you whether the company was presented as a choice for the user. Treating those as one metric hides important differences.
Citation without recommendation
Your article can be cited to support a general fact while your company is never recommended. This is valuable for authority and referral traffic, but it is not the same as commercial visibility.
Recommendation without citation
An assistant can name a business without showing a source beside the name. Depending on the product and mode, the answer may rely on retrieved context, model knowledge or sources not exposed in the interface.
Why source quality matters
If every citation supporting your company points back to your own website, the entity may still lack independent corroboration. External sources that accurately describe the business can increase confidence and reduce the risk of stale self-claims dominating the answer.
What to measure
- Mention rate: percentage of runs in which the brand is named.
- Recommendation rate: percentage of runs in which the brand is presented as a provider or choice.
- Citation rate: percentage of runs in which a page or source associated with the brand is cited.
- Source mix: owned, earned, directory, forum, video and other source types.
- Competitor share of voice: how often named competitors appear across the same question set.
Do not turn citations into a vanity metric
A thousand informational citations that never reach a buyer can be less valuable than a modest recommendation rate on five high-intent questions. Measurement should begin with the commercial questions, not with whichever number looks largest.
