Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of improving content and entity signals so generative search systems can understand, retrieve and use a business as a source or recommendation.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of improving content and entity signals so generative search systems can understand, retrieve and use a business as a source or recommendation.

GEO overlaps heavily with SEO. The useful distinction is the output: conventional search optimization competes for ranked links, while GEO also considers whether a generative system can confidently synthesise your information into an answer.

What GEO should focus on

Clear entities

Define the organization, services, people and locations consistently.

Retrievable answers

Publish concise, factual answers to the questions users ask before buying.

Evidence

Support important claims and build independent corroboration rather than relying only on self-description.

Technical access

Do not hide critical content from crawlers behind scripts, images or blocked paths.

Measured outcomes

Track citations and recommendations across repeated prompts instead of claiming success from a single response.

What GEO is not

GEO is not a magic schema type, an llms.txt file, keyword stuffing for chatbots, or a guaranteed way to control an AI model. Those tactics can distract from the harder work of making a business clear, useful and verifiable.

GEO, AEO and AI SEO

The terminology is still evolving and the disciplines overlap. Visible2 treats them as methods that contribute to one measurable business outcome: AI visibility.

Google's position: GEO is not a separate Google ranking system

Google's May 2026 guidance explicitly addresses GEO and AEO. Its position is that optimizing for generative AI search is still optimizing for Search, because AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in Google's existing ranking and quality systems.

That does not make the term GEO useless. It is a convenient label for work that considers generated answers, citations, entities, query fan-out and recommendation visibility. But on Google, the work should build on SEO rather than bypass it.

A defensible GEO program has five parts

Technical eligibility

Make the content crawlable, indexable where required and stable enough to retrieve.

Non-commodity content

Publish first-hand expertise, original data, case studies and decisions rather than generic summaries.

Entity consistency

Make the organization, people, services and external profiles describe one coherent business.

Third-party evidence

Earn accurate mentions in the places the wider web uses to understand your category.

Repeated measurement

Track whether buyer-question visibility actually changes instead of assuming implementation equals outcome.

What should I do next?

Start with evidence. Run the free Visible2 scan to check whether the website foundations are in place. If the site is ready, move to repeated measurement of the buyer questions that matter rather than making speculative changes.
