How to improve AI visibility: the practical order

Improving AI visibility starts with eligibility, not prompts. A business first has to be crawlable, clearly defined and relevant. Only then does it make sense to work on external corroboration and measure whether assistants actually surface it.

1. Make the important facts crawlable

Put your core business facts — what you do, who you serve, where you operate, important services and contact details — in the HTML delivered with the page. Vercel found that several dedicated AI crawlers do not render client-side JavaScript. Google can render JavaScript through Googlebot, but the safest common denominator is still server-delivered content.

2. Make the business one coherent entity

Use one canonical company name. Keep the website, schema, social profiles and major directories aligned. Connect the organization to its people, services and external profiles with sensible structured data. Structured data is not a magic ranking lever, but it reduces ambiguity and makes relationships explicit.

3. Publish answers that are worth using

Google’s 2026 guidance for generative AI search emphasises valuable, non-commodity content. That is a useful test. Do not create fifty pages that say the same thing with different keywords. Publish the questions buyers actually ask, answer them directly, and add the first-hand detail only your business can supply.

4. Build corroboration away from your own site

Your website is self-description. AI systems can also use external sources to verify who you are. Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks, while YouTube mentions showed the strongest correlation in its follow-up analysis. Correlation is not causation, but the practical direction is clear: being described consistently across the wider web matters.

5. Measure the outcome, not the activity

Do not declare success because a schema test passes or because ChatGPT mentioned you once. Run a defined set of buyer questions repeatedly, separate branded from unbranded prompts, record the assistant and mode, and report recommendation or citation frequency over time.

What not to do

  • Create near-duplicate pages for every possible fan-out query.
  • Treat llms.txt as a ranking lever. Google says it is not needed for Search.
  • Invent “AI-only schema”. Google explicitly says no special structured data is required for generative AI features.
  • Buy inauthentic mentions simply to manufacture a signal.
  • Use a single screenshot as proof of visibility.
