What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is whether AI assistants — ChatGPT, Google AI, Copilot, Gemini — understand a business well enough to recommend it when someone asks for a provider.

It is not a ranking position. There is no page one. An AI assistant either has enough clear, corroborated information to name you, or it does not mention you at all.

Three questions decide it

Before an assistant recommends anyone, it effectively answers three questions about them.

1. Do I understand what this business does?

What it does, who for, and where. This is where most sites fail first, and usually for mundane reasons: services described only inside images or sliders, an about page that states beliefs rather than specifics, or a site where the content only appears after JavaScript runs.

That last one matters more than people expect. Vercel’s network-level analysis found that dedicated crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity did not execute client-side JavaScript in its tests. Google is different because its generative search features are rooted in Google Search and can use Googlebot, which renders JavaScript. The safe cross-platform rule is simple: keep core business facts in the initial HTML rather than making them depend entirely on client-side rendering.

2. Do I trust the source?

An assistant will not take your word for what you are. It looks for corroboration from somewhere other than your own website.

This is the gap almost nobody works on, and it is the one that matters most. Ahrefs’ 75,000-brand analysis found that branded web mentions correlate far more strongly with AI visibility than raw backlink volume. The study is correlational, not proof of causation, but it reinforces the value of a coherent brand footprint beyond your own site.

3. Can I state it cleanly?

A recommendation is one short sentence. If your description is ambiguous, contradictory across your website and your LinkedIn and your directory listings, or confusable with a similarly named company, you get left out of the sentence — not ranked below it.

Why “just do SEO” is not the whole answer

Google’s own guidance calls AEO and GEO “still SEO”, and there is real truth in that. But the competitive unit is different: ten link positions versus a sentence naming two or three providers. And the dominant signal is different — Ahrefs found brand mentions correlate with AI citation at 0.664 versus 0.218 for backlinks.

A site can rank well in Google and be entirely invisible to AI assistants. We see it regularly.

How you would actually know

Carefully, and not by checking once. Research by SparkToro across roughly 2,961 prompt runs found less than a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT or Google AI return the same list of brands on two runs of an identical question.

So the only defensible answer to “am I visible?” is a rate across many runs, not a screenshot. We explain the full method in how we measure.
